Mexico to face World Cup-bound team Nigeria in Atlanta (Mar. 5)
NEW YORK & MEXICO CITY (Thursday, January 9, 2013) The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF) and Soccer United Marketing (SUM) announced today that World Cup-bound Mexico will continue its 2014 pre-World Cup U.S. Tour against Nigeria at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome on Wednesday, March 5 (8:30 p.m. ET) presented by Visa.
An exclusive Visa pre-sale for the Atlanta game will begin Wednesday, January 15 via www.Ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Tickets, which start at $30, will go on sale to the general public on Friday, January 17 at 10:00 a.m. ET on www.Ticketmaster.com, by calling 1-800-745-3000 and at all Atlanta-area Ticketmaster locations. The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol invites fans to use their Visa cards. Tickets for the Arlington match will go on sale at a later date.
As previously announced, El Tricolor will kick off its pre-World Cup tour through the United States in less than three weeks when Mexico faces Korea Republic at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX on Wednesday, January 29, followed by the March 5 and May 31 dates. The remaining U.S. Tour matches for 2014 will be played in the days following the May 31 and ahead of Mexico’s trip to Brazil for the FIFA World Cup. Dates, opponents and venues for those remaining matches will be announced as they are confirmed.
Mexico v Nigeria – Georgia Dome – March 5
Mexico returns to the Georgia Dome on March 5, an international FIFA date. Mexico’s three all-time appearances in Atlanta averaged 52,000 fans per game. The venue last hosted a Tricolor game in July 2013 as part of CONCACAF’s Gold Cup quarterfinal double header, defeating Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 in front of a record 54,229 fans. The Georgia Dome, one of the largest indoor sporting facilities in the United States, is the primary home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.
Mexico and Nigeria have met four times with a 1-0-3 record in favor of Mexico. The two teams last met in May of 2013 as part of Mexico’s U.S. tour, with the match ending in a 2-2 tie at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Nigeria will travel to Brazil in June to participate in the FIFA World Cup where they will face Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iran in Group F.
