ATLANTA (March 1, 2013) Georgia State’s 2013 football schedule for the Panthers’ inaugural season in the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Sun Belt Conference and first year under head coach Trent Miles is complete with the announcement of the seven-game Sun Belt schedule by the conference office.
The 12-game slate includes seven home games at the Georgia Dome and five road games.
For GSU’s inaugural season in the Sun Belt, the Panthers will host conference foes Troy, South Alabama, Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Lafayette at the Georgia Dome and will travel to Arkansas State, Louisiana Monroe and Texas State.
As previously announced, Georgia State’s non-conference schedule features home games against Samford, Chattanooga and Jacksonville State as well as road trips to West Virginia and defending national champion Alabama.
“We are excited to begin this next chapter in Georgia State football with a very attractive and challenging schedule,” said Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick. “We are especially pleased that our home schedule features regional opponents Troy, South Alabama, Western Kentucky, Samford, Chattanooga and Jacksonville State, all within driving distance of the Georgia Dome. In addition, we have amazing opportunities for our fans to travel to road games at Alabama and West Virginia.
“Coach Miles has received such tremendous support from the Georgia State family and the Atlanta community, and we look forward to helping him build this program,” Levick added.
The Panthers will kick off the 2013 season and the Trent Miles era by hosting Samford in the season opener at the Georgia Dome. The game will be played on Thursday, Aug. 29 or Friday, Aug. 30, pending the announcement of the Atlanta Falcons’ preseason schedule.
The Panthers host a second straight home game to start the season as Chattanooga visits the Georgia Dome Sept. 7, followed by the Sept. 14 road trip to West Virginia. After hosting Jacksonville State on Sept. 21, the Panthers have an open date before travelling to Alabama on Oct. 5.
The first Sun Belt Conference game in Georgia State history will take place on Oct. 12 when the Panthers host Troy at the Georgia Dome. One week later, GSU’s first Sun Belt road game will take place at Texas State in San Marcos, Texas on Oct. 19.
The Sun Belt slate continues with home dates against Western Kentucky (Nov. 2), Louisiana-Lafayette (Nov. 16) and South Alabama (Nov. 30) and road tests at Louisiana Monroe (Oct. 26) and Arkansas State (Nov. 23).
The Panthers will play six bowl teams from 2012 in Alabama, West Virginia, Arkansas State, Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette and Western Kentucky.
