Tuesday Talk: 2019 Christmas Eve edition

Tuesday Talk rounds up the latest Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) news you might have missed and also points forward to upcoming events on our campus.

Even though it’s holiday time with many people off work, on family vacations and schools dismissed for winter break this week, the beat goes on at the No. 1 convention, sports, and entertainment destination in the world.

THIS WEEK ON CAMPUS

One half of Centennial Olympic Park’s International Winter Wonderland wraps up today (Tuesday, Dec. 24) as the Atlanta Christkindl Market, centered around the Fountain of Rings plaza, closes. After a 33-day run, the German-themed village will be open for its final day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, so it’s your last chance to visit for 2019.

Meanwhile, the other half of programming that makes up the International Winter Wonderland continues at the Park. The Chinese Lantern Festival, surrounding the Southern Company Amphitheater, opens nightly at 6 through Jan. 5, and you can get tickets here.

After another successful Thanksgiving event at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC), the Christmas edition of Hosea Feed the Hungry & Homeless returns to the convention center’s Thomas Murphy Ballroom and Galleria on Wednesday (Dec. 25) to provide holiday meals for approximately 8,000 people in need. But it’s more than a meal, the event is described as a “festival of human services,” and also provides free haircuts and styling, healthcare screening, clothing and employment assistance.

A warm-up for one of the biggest college football games of the year, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Fan Fest is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 28) at the GWCC’s Building C. The event features interactive games, food and beverages, entertainment, giveaways, and shopping. Get tickets here.

As for the game, the stakes are certainly high for this year’s Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Designated as a College Football Playoff (CFP) Semifinal, the game pits no. 1 Louisiana State University (LSU) against No. 4 Oklahoma, with the winner advancing to the CFP Championship in New Orleans. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 28). For tickets, click here.

Across the street at campus neighbor State Farm Arena, the Atlanta Hawks take on the Milwaukee Bucks at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 27), the World Boxing Association Lightweight Championship will be determined in a bout between Gervonta Davis and Yuriorkis Gamboa at 9 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 28), and on Sunday (Dec. 29) at 7 p.m., the Comedy Laugh Fest features stand-up comedians Cedric The Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, Bruce Bruce, Nephew Tommy and Deon Cole.
