Tuesday Talk: Obama headlines sustainability conference at GWCC

Tuesday Talk rounds up the latest Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) news you might have missed and also points forward to upcoming events on our campus.

The 44th U.S. President, Barack Obama, will deliver a keynote address in November at the world’s largest LEED Gold certified convention center during the world’s largest gathering of green building and sustainability leaders.

“A Conversation with Barack Obama” is set for 8:30 a.m., Wed. Nov. 20 at the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Greenbuild International Conference and Expo hosted at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC).

The USGBC administers the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program, an internationally-recognized green building certification awarded to facilities that employ sustainability strategies, and the 3.9-square-million-feet and growing GWCC achieved Gold status in 2017.

According to USGBC, “Greenbuild is the largest annual event for green building professionals worldwide to learn and source cutting edge solutions to improve resilience, sustainability, and quality of life in our buildings, cities, and communities.”

Greenbuild will take place Nov. 19-22 and includes The Greenbuild Celebration on Nov. 21 at LEED Platinum-certified Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS) on the GWCCA campus, with the headlining entertainment to be announced soon.

MBS LAUNCHES MUSIC FESTIVAL

And speaking of MBS, the stadium announced a new concert series/music festival, ATLive, debuting Nov. 15-17 featuring a slew of country artists including Keith Urban and Eric Church, with tickets going on sale at 10 a.m. Friday (Aug. 23) via Ticketmaster.

Here’s what we know:

The lineup on Nov. 15 includes Urban, Blake Shelton, Surgarland, Sam Hunt, Judah & The Lion and Cale Dodds.

The Nov. 17 lineup includes Church, Luke Combs, Brothers Osborne, and Caylee Hammack.

That leaves the Nov. 16 roster still a mystery, but according to a recent Billboard article, it will not feature country acts.

The three-day event will benefit the Johnny Mac Soldier’s Fund and Quest Community Development.
